Standard Chartered scoops overall EYA 2012

At an event hosted in Dar es Salaam by the Association of Tanzania Employers (ATE) on Wednesday evening, over 30 companies battled it out for the top prize. CRDB Bank Plc was the 1st runners up, winning the Silver Award while Tanzania Breweries Limited (TBL) emerged the second runners up, winning the Bronze Award.

Officiating at the event, President Jakaya Kikwete thanked Tanzanian employers - public and private - for the great work they have done to support the government through job creation and economic development.

“I am grateful to share this moment with all of you this evening. You have been of great support to this nation and I assure you that the government will support you in your activities,” said the president.

He charged that the government alone cannot transform Tanzania into the middle income economy unless there were concerted efforts by the public and private sectors. Mr Kikwete challenged ATE to work together with the government on human resource development, particularly in developing sustainable partnerships between institutions of higher learning and the labour market.

EYA is the important ATE-hosted annual event. Mr Almas Athuman Maige, the newly elected Chairperson of ATE, said that the event aims at promoting and encouraging best human resources management practices as well as improving organisational productivity and competitiveness.

He said human resource is the most precious asset any company can have, “ATE recognises continuous improvement of the human resource at the workplace, hence the reason for introduction of new awards this year.” Mr Maige noted further that EYA propels best practices in human resource, a key element in business success and a driver of the economy.

According to Dr Aggrey Mlimuka, ATE Executive Director, this year’s event was different from the previous ones as there were additional awards categories.

Some of the new award categories included Employment Disability Inclusiveness, Leadership and Governance, Quality and Productivity, Workforce Focus and Human Resource Management Functions.

“This event gives ATE members an opportunity to showcase what they did with regards to the human resource management, taking into consideration the value of skilled and motivated employees towards organizational excellence,” said Dr Mlimuka. There were a total of 23 awards to various winners, emerging from different categories.
