The match to be staged at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam will be much more important for the Tanga-based army team, as they battle to avoid relegation. Sitting eighth in the league standing, Mgambo JKT are not safe.
They are still very much embroiled in the relegation zone because they sit just six points above bottom-placed Tanzania Prisons of Mbeya and four above second last Polisi Morogoro.
A win against Simba today, will see the Tanga lads crawling up into much safer zone to remain in the top flight league next season. For Simba, the match will provide an opportunity for a revenge following their 2-0 defeat to Mgambo JKT in the first round match held in Tanga.
Simba, who sit third in the league table on 35 points, need miracles to qualify for CAF club competitions next season, following their latest defeat in Mbeya. It will be the third straight season for the giants to miss out in the continental club competitions.
With four games remaining, Simba will total only 47 points if they manage to win them all, a tally that has already been surpassed by champions-in-waiting Young Africans, who have totalled 49 points following their 3-2 win over Stand United of Shinyanga at the National Stadium on day.
Nothing much has remained for Simba to fight for this season but the Msimbazi Reds can’t afford to slip up again today because surely, a defeat will spark the already simmering crisis at the club.
Simba returned to Dar es Salaam over the weekend and resumed training at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Grounds yesterday morning to prepare for the match.
Another league match today will pit Polisi Morogoro and Coastal Union of Tanga at the Jamhuri Stadium in Morogoro. This will be a relegation battle as both teams are in the danger zone.
Polisi are second bottom on 24 points from 23 outings and they need to win all their remaining three matches and pray teams above them –Ndanda FC of Mtwara and JKT Ruvu of Coast Regions - drop points.
Coastal Union, who sit tenth in the league table on 27 points, are also in the relegation zone, but two wins in their remaining three matches will see them escape from the drop zone.
