Public warned against uncertified electricians

This is despite the fact that there are only 736 licensed contractors in the country against a population of 45 million people, out of which about 14 per cent are connected to electricity. Energy and Water Utility Regulatory Authority (EWURA) Director General, Mr Haruna Masebu, gave the caution when presenting certificates to 41 contractors and electricians in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

He observed that although the number of the licensed contractors and wire men is small, using those not professionally qualified and certified could be recipe for huge disasters when an electrical fault occurs in a building. "

Electricity wiring that does not conform to required standards and done by people with little knowledge or skills could lead to huge losses when disaster strikes and would make it even more to diagnose the cause of the problem," he stressed.

Mr Masebu warned contractors against employing the services of unqualified people and refrain from accepting applications for electricity wiring without inspecting the qualifications of the electricians. "It is a criminal offence to wire a building for electricity without a licence.

The only legal licence is that which is issued by EWURA," he stressed, noting that application information can be found at the authority's website www.ewura.go.tz.

One of the contractors who received a licence, Mr Felix Zakaria Mkungile of Mtembwe Technical and Supply Limited in Dar es Salaam, said the licence now means he will be doing his duties professionally and setting him apart from uncertified electricians commonly known as 'vishoka.'
