Noose tightened over drugs

Tanzania Information Services Director Assah Mwambene said the government’s move seeks to address emergence of parties that paint ugly understanding of Tanzania as one of the gateway for illicit drugs. He said the drug dealers and traffickers should count themselves out of the business as the government is prepared for the battle.

“Soon, drug trafficking and Tanzania being looked at in bad light as a gateway will end and those involved should know that their days are numbered,’’ Mr Mwambene emphasized.

He said the government has tightened security at all entry points as security officials are working together with their colleagues in neighbouring countries to establish the chain and take to task those involved.

Moreover, he added, the government has started conducting training and psychological rehabilitation to drug addicts who are the key market for the drug barons.

The TIS chief said that in another development, the government will issue soft loans to youths who are being used by drug dealers to traffic the obnoxious cargo to various parts on the world to enable them to engage on legal economic undertakings.“

If the youth can be able to manage their economical needs, we believe they will not be easily manipulated to get involved in drug trafficking,” observed Mr Mwambene.

He told reporters that already a special educational campaign is underway to sensitise groups that are at risk of being involved in the drug business The government’s move will beef up the efforts already being taken by the Minister for Transport, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, to rid the country of the drugs menace and bring to an end the long-standing practice whereby barons were using Tanzania as a base and conduit for their illegal trade.
