The Secretary General of the Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT), Makore Mashaga confirmed to the ‘Sunday News’ that the team which mostly comprise boxers was due to fly out this morning to the People’s Republic of China.
Mashaga named the amateur boxers who were to make the trip today as Selemani Kidunda (69kg), Ezra Paul (56kg), Nassar Mafuru (60kg) Hamis Furahisha (56 kg), Mohamed Hakimu (81kg) plus their trainer Hassan Mzonge.
Other athletes are Table Tennis players-- Amoni Tumaini and Neema Mwaisula. The athletes will pitch a month a half camp in preparation for the Commonwealth Games as part of the government’s efforts to bring to an end the long medals drought in the country.
The first batch of ‘Team Tanzania’ athletes left Thursday to Turkey for the same purpose. The batch included boxers and Judokas.
The boxers were Joseph Martin (75 Kg), Emillian Patrick (56 kg), Fabian Gaudence (60 kg) plus their trainer Jonas Mwakipesile.
Other athletes who left for Turkey camp are four Judokas -- Andrew Mlugu, Abubakari Nzige, Zaidi Hamis Omari and Mbarouk Suleiman Mbarouk and two weightlifters Abdullah Shaib Abdallah and Jalinus Issa Suleiman.
Another batch included runners which left on the same day to Ethiopia and New Zealand.
The camp has been facilitated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in collaborations with the Ministry of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports through Sports Diplomacy.
Glasgow event which is set for July 23 to August 3, this year will see at least 4,500 athletes compete for 261 medals in 17 sports at 14 venues.
