SUGECO trains 200 youth in agri-food skills

SOKOINE University of Agriculture Graduate Entrepreneurs Cooperative (SUGECO) has trained some 200 youths in agriculture and animal rearing expertise.

The three-month SUGECO AgriFood Entrepreneurship Initiative programme focused on impacting entrepreneurial skills to increase production of both products.

SUGECO Chairperson, Dr Anna Temu said the training was provided to various youth groups in agricultural business, productive farming operations, better breeding, value addition of agricultural products and livestock and processing of agricultural products.

The beneficiaries are from Dar es Salaam, Mwanza, Lindi, Mtwara, Morogoro, Unguja and Pemba, who were given sustainable and productive entrepreneurship skills from SUGECO experts to add value to their activities.

The end goal is to acquaint young entrepreneurs with business management skills which are vital for establishing and running small businesses productively.

Also, SUGECO's goal is to reach more entrepreneurs in the country, especially young people with different educational backgrounds so that they can benefit economically from sustainable entrepreneurial activities.

A training beneficiary, Mr Mathew Mtaba, said they are facing some challenges including a lack of farming land and capital.

"We thank SUGECO for the knowledge imparted to us,” Mr Mtaba said adding without ample farming land and capital the challenge is far from over.

The SUGECO Initiative is a sponsored training program designed to help youth make better choices and fully exploit business opportunities.

SUGECO Initiative merges the academic excellence of Bocconi University (Italy), University of Maryland (USA) and the Sokoine University of Agriculture with the experience of SUGECO, to offer a cutting-edge business development course to the country’s young entrepreneurs and SMEs in the agricultural sector.
