The regional basketball league (RBA) set to tip off from May 28th this year at Benjamin Mkapa Indoor Stadium, will be opened by five matches during the opening day’s showdown.

The association’s technical and competition director Haleluya Kavalambi said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that preparation for the regional level league is almost complete ahead of the showdown later this month.

Kavalambi said sixteen men and seven women’s teams will be engaged in a battle for the top thrones.

Besides the reigning champion Savio, other teams in the men’s category are ABC, Oilers, Chui, DTB, JKT, Police, Jogoo, UDSM- Outsiders, Kurasini Heat, Ukonga Kings, Mchenga, Ukonga Warriors, Mgulani JKT, and Vijana City Bulls.

Kavalambi said Savio will start their title defence against ABC on May 28th and the game is a throwback to the last year’s league final playoff.

Later at 17:00hrs after the opening ceremony, it will be followed by the last game of the day between Pazi and the 2020 champions, Kurasini Heat.

The opening day to start at 11:00hrs will see JKT facing Mgulani JKT before Ukonga Kings face Ukonga Warriors (13: 00) while Vijana City Bulls will lock horns with Jogoo at (15:00hrs).

He said that the league will be played every weekend and will run until August 21st this year to pick eight top teams that will sail through to the quarterfinal’s playoff on August 24th.

Savio grabbed the title last year from Kurasini Heat who won it in 2020.

Kurasini Heat’s Amini Mkosa, who later joined Malawian giants Bravehearts, last year, was instrumental in his team’s success.

When Savio won the title Mkosa was quoted as saying: “I feel sorry for Kurasini Heat for not being able to defend the title, but at the same time am happy that Savio won it..you know I grew up in the game from Donbosco, yes I was part of Kurasini Heat success but my mother team is Savio. I compliment them for the win as I know it wasn’t an easy ride.”

Under head coach Evarist Mapunda Savio has won the title by 3-1 games over tough contenders ABC in the best of five final showdowns.

Top player, Hasheem Thabeet starred on his return to the RBA League last year and he steered Savio to win the title.
