Minister assures timely completion of power projects 

ENERGY Minister, Mr January Makamba has assured the public that all rural electrification projects will be completed by the end of this year despite various challenges including price hike in electrification equipment.

He said following the increasing complaints related to delays in executing rural electrification projects, the ministry is planning to employ a coordinator for Rural Energy Agency (REA) in every constituency for close supervision and monitoring.

Mr Makamba said the REA official will be a link between parliamentarians, councils, contractor and the national power utility –Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) in addressing the challenges in case of controversy.

Minister Makamba was responding to a supplementary question by Mr Daniel Silo (Babati - CCM) who wanted to know what plans the government has put in place to ensure timely completion of the rural electrification projects.

"We know there are challenges in availability of equipment that caused complaints and slow pace in the implementation of some rural electrification projects, be rest assured they will be complete by end of this year" assured Mr Makamba.

Minister Makamba further said that changes in prices of electric equipment in rural electrification projects but they have taken some steps to rescue the situation.

Moreover, he said, they have signed new agreement with REA contractors and come up with strategies which will see them complete the rural electrification project by December this year.

He said all REA managers and heads countrywide are meeting in Dodoma and will be ready to respond to any issues of the parliamentarian as far as rural electrification projects are concerned.

In another incident, Ms Stella Manyanya (Nyasa-CCM) wanted to know disciplinary or legal measures that are being imposed to distributors and manufacturers of substandard electric poles.

Responding, Mr Makamba said he was in Mafinga two weeks back to discuss with poles manufacturers on the assurance of availability and quality of the poles.

He admitted that in many areas the quality of the poles is below standard, thus the ministry is coming up with a plan to get the standard ones, which must have the Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) specifications.
