Samia treasures TZ arts, music

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her profound love of Tanzanian arts, music and culture yesterday, the day when she celebrated her birthday.

Samia, the Head of State, made her revelation during an interview with the Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation saying her most loved genre is Taarab, the only cultural music widely played in Tanzania Mainland and the Isles. She said she prefers to listen to 'taarab' as her company during working hours because music offers her calmness.

The National Broadcasting Corporation interviewed President Samia during the commemoration of her birthday, when she turned 62 yesterday.

"Whenever I am at the office, dealing with some files, I prefer listening to taarab." As well as listening to taarab music, she explained that she likes to play with her grandchildren in her free time or when she is tired.

"When I feel tired after completing several activities, my grandchildren come to the State House and play with me. "Apart from enjoying 'taarab' music, President Samia has always shown love to culture, arts and sports industry by supporting the development of that industry.

In ensuring that this sector succeeds, the government issued 1.5 bil/- to help the improvement of this sector. Other than offering that financial aid, President Samia removed Value Added Tax (VAT) on imported artificial turfs.

The move aims at encouraging the improvement of the venues. She also issued the directives to improve CCM owned stadia across the country, and the establishment of sports academies in all regions will certainly make a significant turning point to the development of sports in the country.

To acknowledge the achievement of national teams, President Samia honoured an invitation to senior women football teams Twiga Stars and Tanzanite for bravely making the country proud of their numerous successes, including clinching COSAFA silverware.

She also met with the national amputee football team to congratulate them for picking a World Cup ticket to Turkey in October.

President Samia also held talks with the Tanzania men youth team and issued her congrats for winning the CECAFA U-23 Challenge Cup.

In her leadership, she has ensured that COSOTA fulfills her directives of charging royalties from all individuals who use artists’ works of art.
