Zanzibar VP challenges empowerment beneficiaries to optimize opportunities

First Vice President, Mr Othman Masoud Othman has called on young people who have been economically empowered by different development partners to use that opportunity for attaining prosperity as well as uplifting others.

Speaking at an event to handover aid to 15 groups engaged in entrepreneurship, after they had applied for assistance from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Mr Othman said proper utilization of aid and good results would build confidence in donors to provide more support to address youth unemployment in the country.

The First Vice President explained during the event held at the Zanzibar Beach Resort that the government appreciates the efforts by the USAID to promote people’s welfare in Zanzibar.

“So, it is important to ensure that financial and professional assistance they receive is used properly,” Mr Othman said as he appealed to government executives to continue working in line with government’s goals, especially in promoting competitive market production.

USAID Resident Director, Ms Kate Somvongsiri said the US government is committed to helping the Tanzanian youth and the Zanzibar Revolutionary Government to achieve the 2050 vision and the 2025 vision for Zanzibar and Tanzania Mainland respectively that aims to uplift the lives of Tanzanians.

She mentioned that the ‘Youth economy uplifting projects’ implemented in Iringa, Mbeya and Zanzibar regions are aimed to support rural youth aged 15-35 years get involved in agribusiness and increase economic opportunities while promoting leadership and a better life.

The $1.1m USAIDfunded project has been empowering young people in a variety of productive ways and connecting them to other sectors in creating employment.
