Damas, Elisante sparkle at Blue Economy run

FRANCIS Damas and Natalia Elisante stamped authority in road race after winning men and women titles in the Zanzibar Blue Economy Half Marathon on Saturday.

Damas from Nyuki Brigade won the men’s 21km race clocking 1 hour, 03 minutes and 01 second while Elisante from KMKM clocked 1 hour, 20 minutes and 12 seconds to win the women’s title.

JKU athlete Nelson Mbuya finished the runner up after spending 1:03.54 while the women’s title went to Tunu Raphael from Mafunzo who clocked 1:20.40.

Third overall in men’s category was Yohana Sulle from Prisons who spent 1:04:11 while Mary Naali of Arusha was third in women’s race after spending 1:26:32.

For the 10 km race which was bankrolled by KCB Bank, the winner in women category was Maiselina Mbuwa of TPDF who spent 34:42.13 while the men’s category winner was Fabian Sulle from Polisi Arusha who clocked 29:20.92.

Zanzibar President Hussein Alli Mwinyi participated in a 4 km walk from Kisonge and passed through various streets on the way to Amaan Stadium where he awarded the winners of the 21km Half Marathon and the 10 km race.

In his remarks, chairman of the event’s organising committee, Abdallah Majura said the charity marathon will be staged annually with the aim of giving back to the community and that this year’s proceeds will be channeled towards construction of Fumba Fish market.
