Arts festival to market Bagamoyo tourist sites

TOURISM in Bagamoyo district heads for more global through the 40th Bagamoyo Festival of Arts and Culture scheduled to start this weekend.

The Ministry of Arts, Culture and Sports intends to use such event, which is expected to attract 60,000 people, as another opportunity to market tourist attractions in the district and other places. Participants from within and outside the country, including China, India, Malawi and others are heading to Bagamoyo for the festival.

Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Hassan Abbasi, stated apart from arts and music entertainments, the participants will get an opportunity to visit Saadan National Park and various historical sites.

“This festival will be part of promoting the country’s tourism, we have decided to link it with tourism,” Abbasi stated on Tuesday when introducing the three-day festival.

Organized by the Bagamoyo Arts and cultural Institute (TasuBa), the festival will start tomorrow. Abbasi said President Samia Suluhu Hassan toured the district in September this year when recording the Royal Tour Programme, and hence; the festival will be part of supporting the President’s efforts to promote the country’s heritages.

He noted that participants will get opportunity to visit tourist attractions that President Samia used to record the Royal Tour programme. He further said arts and culture sector is also part of employment and it has employed many Tanzanian youth.

“Through this sector the government wants to give more job opportunities to Tanzanian youth,” he said.

“We want to make the sector to contribute more to the country’s economy,” he stated.

Coast Regional Commissioner Abubakar Kunenge called upon residents in the region to turn up in large number during the festival, assuring them of security.

“We will ensure that all areas are safe to allow people participate peacefully,” he said.

He said during the three days of the festival, people will also get opportunity to see tourist attractions, thus making it as part of marketing the attractions. On her part, Bagamoyo District Commissioner Zainabu Issa said hotels in Bagamoyo will be offering special discount to encourage visitors go to the district for the festival.
