Samia decorates Twiga Stars

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan has rewarded the national women team, Twiga Stars for winning COSAFA Cup Women Championship in South Africa a fortnight ago.

Impressed by their performance in the international level event, President Samia has also awarded Twiga Stars players plots of land. Brave Tanzanian ladies secured the COSAFA silverware after defeating Malawi 1-0 in the final staged at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa.

Enekia Kasonga netted winner in the 64th minute off a rebound after Malawian goalkeeper Rusth Mhango had parried the ball into play. The President rewarded the brave ladies shortly before she hosted a luncheon to the players at State House in Dar es Salaam and the President said the victory made her walk with pride.

"You are heroes, and indeed your names will be in the history books." Apart from commending the COSAFA champions for their heroic performance, she acknowledged three players who were the most brilliant in the tournament.

Among the players is Zubeda Mgunda, who saved three penalties in the semi-final match against Zambia tgo enable Twiga Stars sail to the final on a 3-2 victory. She compared her ability to the former French goalkeeper, Fabien Barthez.

She also praised Twiga Stars skipper Amina Bilal for showing high quality skills.

Despite her small stature, she was a good midfielder who bridged the defence and attackers, so she was the team’s miniature dynamo. She also applauded Fatuma Issa for her excellence in the defence. She compared her ability to the former AC Milan defensive midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

Besides her praises to the players,President Samia also congratulated Twiga Stars Head Coach Bakari Shime for showing great and unique coaching skills that enabled the brave girls to win the COSAFA titles for Under-17 and Under-20 teams and now the senior team.

"You have done a great job. However, I am aware of the challenges you are facing in developing the team." She also directed the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) and other sports associations to invest in developing coaching skills to enable the country’s football run by professional and skilled coaches.

President Samia also acknowledged the National cricket teams, both men and women for securing third places in the International Cricket Council (ICC) this year. She appealed to them to work hard and to win a title in their future competitions. Moreover, the President hailed the six Tanzanian envoys in the world's fashion and beauty pageants for proudly representing the country in the continental competition.

She also directed the Minister of Art, Culture and Sports Innocent Bashungwa to begin preparations for the world competitions that will be staged next year in Brazil. The government and sports associations' officials attended the luncheon, including the Ministry Arts, Culture and Sports, Tanzania Football Federation (TFF), the Tanzania Deaf Arts and Cultural Centre.
