MANYARA produced a 100- per cent run in the ongoing CRDB Taifa Cup Basketball tournament to beat bottom placed Kigoma by 67-54 points at Chinangali courts here on Monday.
A partnership of Ezra Lukmay and Bruno Mbega destroyed Kigoma’s strong defence. The duo netted 16 and 15 points, respectively.
The defeat leaves Kigoma at the bottom with two points in the Group B that consists of six teams. Manyara on the other hands go up to the fourth place with four points, dropping Mwanza to the fifth place.
The first quarter saw Manyara leading 16-13 but their opponents changed their pattern of play into more attacking to produce a 12-9 lead for a 25- point all draw at the breather.
Kigoma, through a striking force marshalled by Said Habib went on pressurizing for good results but things did not work out for their side as champions Manyara secured a 21-15 third quarter lead.
The last quarter also ended 21-14 in a favour of the victors. Mbeya, who beat Simiyu by 79-47 at the weekend, they also lost 57-79 to Coast in another match.
The victory took Coast from second to the top position to squarely level with Mbeya by sharing six points each. Meanwhile, Tabora continued their winning streak to beat Rukwa by 49-39 in another men’s battle.
Their winning is part of their recently improvement after beating Katavi by 56-47 points.
“ We have drastically improved since we lost our opening match to Kilimanjaro region,” said Tabora coach, Joachim Kaneno. “ We won against Rukwa because they had weak shooters in the first two quarters.”
“What I did is to mount pressure on them was marshaling my entire defence zone for their strikers to fail penetrating.”
“The pressure they had resulted to making regular fouls that gave us shots to win points,” he said.
The first quarter saw them leading 14-6 and extended their victory to the second quarter to win 18-5 for a 32-11 half time comfortable win.
Rukwa wake up from slumber to win last two quarters but that could not change the results. The quarters ended at 15-7 and 13-10 in their favour.
Baraka Mopele, who contributed nine points for Rukwa attributed his team’s failure due to lack of target. “We created a lot of chances but we could not turn them into points.”
“Our opponents used well the chances they created in the first two quarters and we failed to recover in the last quarters.” said Mopele.
Meanwhile, Tyron Edward scored 20 points as Tanga whipped hosts, Dodoma by 47-29 in the Group C’s duel. The victory has pushed Tanga from bottom to the second position with four points behind leaders, Dodoma.
There are a total of 24 men teams in the event as 12 women sides are battling it out for their side.
CRDB bank are the main sponsors while other co- sponsors include Sanlam and Mayfair Insurance. The draw for the teams has the following teams in the groups.
Group A teams are Ilala, Kilimanjaro, Tables, Rukwa Shinyanga and Katavi. Group B has Mbeya, Mwanza, Manyara, Kigoma, Coast and Kinondoni.
Group C has Songwe, Dodoma, Morogoro, CRDB Youth ( featuring the Under-19 team) Tanga and Mtwara. Group D has Temeke, Arusha, Iringa, Singida, Pemba and Unguja. The women teams in the groups are as follows.
Group A has Ilala, Iringa, Morogoro and Coast. Group B has Temeke, Dodoma, Arusha and Singida while group C has Mbeya, Unguja, CRDB Youth (featuring the Under-19 players) and Tanga
