Night league matches outside Dar coming

THE Tanzania Premier League Board (TPLB) said some of the league venues outside Dar es Salaam will soon begin to host evening matches to quench desire of football fans.

Azam TV, who are the official broadcasters of the Mainland Premier League already, disclosed that they will install flood lights in some of the selected venues so that evening games can be easily beamed.

Until now, only Benjamin Mkapa Stadium and Azam Complex both located in Dar es Salaam have the capacity to entertain evening football matches compared to the rest of the venues.

However, elaborating on this recently, TPLB Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Almas Kasongo narrated that they are working abreast with Azam TV, to ensure that selected venues from outside Dar es Salaam have the necessary infrastructure to stage evening encounters.

“We thank Azam TV for taking a leading role on facilitation to install flood lights so that people can also watch league games at night.

“For the time being, only Simba, Young Africans and Azam have the opportunity for their matches to be played at night since their venues have the required infrastructure to embrace such duels,” said Kasongo.

In a related development, the board's CEO disclosed that as one way to accelerate league efficiency, they will continue to suspend playing arenas, which do not meet the standards to host league matches.

“So far, two venues have been suspended which are Gwambina Complex and Biashara United’s Karume Stadium in Mara but our stand is that the exercise of suspending other poor fields will go on.

“The first law of governing football centres on the nature of the hosting venue, that is why we want to be serious with this issue for the sake of uplifting our football standards," he said.

Also, Kasongo said that the available league fixtures will go through minor amendments so as to fit in FIFA calendar matches.

“Initially, when we drafted the current fixture, we predicted on the dates to be occupied by FIFA games and the good thing is that what we visualised before is almost the same as such, only few changes will be taken,” said he.

However, following the deduction of teams parading in the league from 20 teams last season to 18 teams this season, the move has enabled competing sides to have ample time of preparation almost one week between games, which are recommendable bearing on the geographical nature of the country.

With at least seven days, teams can easily travel long distances to accomplish their respective league fixtures.
