THE IMMIGRATION department in Shinyanga has arrested more than 100 illegal immigrants from neighboring countries engaging in economic activities in several areas in the region between August and October.
Briefing reporters in Shinyanga on Thursday, a spokesman for the department in the region, Mr. Godson Mwanawima said 103 illegal immigrants were arrested in a special operation conducted in the region during where seven Tanzanians were also nabbed for offering them a safe haven.
According to Mr. Mwinawima, legal measures were instituted against the immigrants, of whom 34 were ordered to vacate the country and the remaining 60 set free after cross examination of their stay was later confirmed to be valid.
The operation which was conducted by the immigration office in Shinyanga region found a big number of illegal immigrants at Kahama and Shinyanga district working in mineral plants, plantations while others work as casual laborers.
About 46 of the arrested were citizens from Burundi, 13 from Rwanda while others were Chinese, Kenyans, Indians and Ethiopians.
He added that as the region braces for the rainy season, another operation will be mounted against illegal immigrants in Kahama district in tobacco and rice farms where the immigrants enter the country to work as cheap laborers.
Mr. Mwanawima added that their department will also conduct an operation at mineral plants at Kakola, Mwakitolyo and Bulyanhulu where aliens also work as cheap laborers.
