Simiyu to host Serengeti Marathon in November


SIMIYU region will host the 2017 Serengeti Marathon to be on November 20th, this year, organisers said yesterday.

Speaking to the “Daily News on Saturday’ during an exclusive interview, Managing Director of Serengeti Sports Centre, who are the main organiser of the race, Fabian Fanuel said preparations to stage the event are in progress.

He called upon various athletes inside and outside the country to turn up in big numbers during the race. “We have decided to announce the race date early so as to allow athletes prepare effectively. Registration fee for Tanzanian runners will be 10,000/- and 20,000/- for foreigners’’ he said.

Fanuel said the marathon will be used as a platform to develop athlete’s talents, promote tourism and fight against poaching in the country. “The main aim of the race to stage this marathon nearby Serengeti National Park is to make sure that we uplift athletes’ standard in the country, promote tourism and to stop poaching.

He thanked Athletics Tanzania (AT) for their support toward the preparation of the competition, which will involve 5 kilometres fun race, 10 km, 21km half marathon.

He also invited the winners of the Inter-Primary and Secondary Schools Games to turn up in big number so as to participate in the race. This will be the fifth time for the marathon to be conducted.

The first edition was staged in 2012. Serengeti Sports Centre Spokesperson Fortunata Projestus said various prizes will be awarded to the winners. She called upon different corporate to come up and sponsor the marathon.

Serengeti marathon so far has one sponsor - Home Base Signs.
