Uganda Cranes, Azam share spoils

MUZAMIRU Mutyaba rescued Uganda Cranes with an injury time equalizer to draw 2-2 with Azam FC in a friendly at St Mary’s Kitende Stadium in Uganda.

Azam who are in Uganda on a 10-day pre-season training camp ahead of the Mainland Premier League, took the lead of the match a few minutes before a break through their newly signed striker Waziri Junior.

Azam went into the breather 1-0 in a match the Cranes coaches Moses Basena and Fred Kajoba used as preparation for their crucial game CHAN qualifying match against Rwanda’s Amavubi in Kampala this weekend.

The Cranes came into the second half rejuvenated and in the 52nd minute, Nico Wadada cancelled Waziri lead and in the 65th minute Yahaya Muhammed nearly put Azam into the lead once again but the muscular forward missed the chance inside 6 yards.

In the 80th minute Joseph Kimwaga brought Azam back into the lead after scoring the second goal for his side and restoring hope for the Romanian tactician Aristica Cioaba to record a win against the Carnes.

But just a minute before the final whistle, Cranes Mutyaba spoiled Azam party in Uganda with an 89th minute goal. After facing the Uganda national team side, Azam are also set to play Uganda’s reigning champions, KCCA on Thursday at Lugogo, Onduparaka on Friday (at Muteesa II Stadium, Wakulukuku) and with URA on Sunday.

Cranes who will take on Amavubi this weekend in the first leg of the CHAN qualifiers, got a fair test from the ice-cream makers club. A week later, Rwanda will entertain Uganda in the return leg at the Kigali Regional stadium, Nyamirambo.

The winner on aggregate will qualify for the final tournament that will be hosted by Kenya in 2018. Azam FC team in Uganda comprises Mwadini Ally, Razak Abalora, Benedict Haule, Aggrey Morris, David Mwantika, Yakubu Mohammed, Daniel Amoah, Abdallah Kheri, Swaleh Abdallah, Bruce Kangwa, Hamimu Abdul, and skipper Himid Mao.
