Dodoma wine company to introduce new grapevine seed

DODOMA-based Central Tanzania Wine Company (Cetawico) plans to introduce new grapevine seed to diversify crop production. The company intends to support small-scale wine processors to increase the capacity of their plants and improve the quality of their products.

Speaking to the ‘Daily News’ during a recent media tour of the factory, Cetawico Managing Director Fiorenzo Chesini said developments followed increased demand for varieties of wine in the global market.

“We have agreed more than 700 farmers to purchase grapes and expect to expand our production level in the future,” he said. He noted that most local farmers still lacked requisite skills in grape farming and wine production, so plans were underway to train farmers in relevant agronomic practices.

For his part, Cetawico wine maker and quality controller Erick Schlunz said the factory was producing best wines used in different parts of the world. “In few years to come, we will stand at the helm of the world’s most wine processing companies. As for now, our products compete with high profile factories from South Africa,” he said.

Among the top and best wines produced at the facility include Sharye, rosier, presidential, Chenin Blanc, tresor, crystal, ruby, sharazad, ambassador and the presidential reserve. Launched on June 26, 2005 by former President William Benjamin Mkapa, the plant has played a key role in the promotion of grape farming in the region.
