Dar es Salaam brace for national boxing tourney

MBEYA is expected to be the first region to arrive in Dar es Salaam today, ahead of the national boxing championship set for National Stadium starting Monday. 

Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) Secretary General, Makore Mashaga said on Friday that preparations are going on well with 19 regions expected to compete in the annual event. He said over 100 amateur boxers are expected to compete in the week-long championship. Mashaga said BFT Executive Committee has endorsed Mohamed Kasilamatwi and Juma Selemani to head the panel of judges for the event.

They have also endorsed other eight judges to oversee the championship namely Maneno Omar, Ridhaa Kimweli, Mohamed Bamtulla, Shija Masanja, Mafuru Mafuru, Moshi Makali, Hamza Abdallah and Marko Mwanjenja. He also said that most of the region’s teams have promised to arrive in the city tomorrow ready for the championship.

“We are bracing for a more competitive championship this time around, going by the preparations of the teams,” said Mashaga. He said they will use the annual event to select boxers who will form the national provisional squad for Africa Championship to be held in Casablanca, Morocco later this year.

He named the regions that have so far confirmed their participation in the championship as Tanga, Morogoro, Kagera, Arusha, Dodoma, Kigoma, Mbeya, Coast Region, Kinondoni, Ilala, Temeke and Iringa.
