THE Tanzania Baseball and Softball Association (TABSA) needs 20m/- to conduct the first national level tournament in Dar es Salaam later this month.
The association’s Assistant Secretary General, Amanyisye Kaboneka said the funding is urgently need to enable TABSA organise successful tournament at Azania Secondary School ground.
He said the tournament will be officially launched on November 30 and is scheduled to reach its climax on December 3 at the same venue.
According to him, the tournament will be used to pick the best players for the national teams; baseball for men and softball for women. Both baseball and soft ball are yet to gain popularity in Tanzania, a situation Kaboneka believes will be addressed through open tournaments at the national level.
Adding, he said the men’s squad will be formed by 18 players while the women team will comprise 12 players. Explaining further, he said the 20m/- funding would be used to foot internal transport of teams, accommodation and allowances of players and officials.
The national level tournaments will involve teams from Mbeya, Dodoma, Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar, Ruvuma and Mwanza. “Most of players are students. Schools such as Kibasila, Azania, Juhudi and Dodoma Sec are among the major produces of the best baslet ball players at the moment,” he said.
Winners of the tournament will be awarded trophies for the first and the second finisher while the third will take home a shield. He said there are only two teams; Ruvuma and Dar-es-salaam in the women category.
He said the best players of the tournament will be then engaged in East African Baseball tournament which will be played in Mwanza on 7-10 December this year. He called upon sports stake holders to help them in revitalising and promoting the game countrywide.
