Ewura told to safeguard consumer interests

ENERGY and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) Regional Consumers Committee for Singida region was launched here with a strong call for them to execute their functions responsibly in order to make the body meaningful.

Singida Regional Commissioner, Dr Parseko Kone, made the call here on Thursday during the official inauguration of the Committee held at his office.

Dr Kone observed that water and energy services were important to every human being and that no one would survive without them. "For that reason, it is important to have in place reliable machinery which will safeguard the interests of consumers of the EWURA regulated goods and services," the RC said.

However, Dr Kone cautioned the newly inaugurated committee to observe the country's existing laws and take into consideration the limits of their roles in executing their functions. "If you will observe the country's laws and your roles limits, you will never be involved in unnecessary interferences and squabbles with other institutions," Dr Kone told the committee.

The RC further called on the committee to educate, raise awareness, receive and disseminate the correct information to consumers of the regulated goods and services so that they can be able to know their rights and responsibilities.

Dr Kone equally called on consumers of the EWURA regulated goods and services to utilize the goods carefully and prudently while asking the suppliers to provide high quality goods and services without any lame excuses.

Earlier, the Chairperson of the EWURA Consumers Consultative Council (EWURA CCC), Eng Prof Jamidu Katima, said the Regional Consumers Committee was representing the interests of consumers for EWURA regulated  goods and services in the region.
