AUTHORITIES on the island have revealed that people, particularly the youth, destroyed the roads mostly because they lacked the culture of roads maintenance.
"Burning of tires and other items on roads destroy roads greatly. Youths should avoid doing that in times of unrests," advised Mr Machano Othman Saidi, minister without portfolio, when giving his views about the development of roads in Zanzibar.
He said that Zanzibar had recorded admirable achievements in the roads sector in the past ten years, but the development should be conserved by the members of the community.
Minister for Infrastructure and Communication, Mr Rashid Seif Suleiman also blamed unplanned parking of vehicles and unnecessary drawing for damaging of roads.
"We need to work collectively to maintain and protect the roads. It is expensive to build a road and therefore we should make sure that roads are protected," Suleiman said.
The minister said that the best way to protect roads "is Zanzibaris to avoid reckless expansion of human settlement to reserved areas of the road or littering roads with different types of wastes."
