Region’s teachers threaten to join ‘Saba-Saba’ strike

THE Arusha Regional Council for Teachers Association (CWT) has announced that its members will be joining the 'Saba-Saba' countrywide strike, planned for the first week of July.

An official statement from the CWT explains that teachers in Arusha Region will join their counterparts throughout the country in a major protest which is scheduled to start on the seventh day of next month (July 7), with a sole mission of pressurizing the government on the increment of salaries and payment of other arrears.

The teachers' statement made available here, also calls upon parents to support them in their mission to down tools from 'Saba-Saba' day until their demands are met to satisfaction. But the countrywide strike slated for the 7th of July, may not exactly record good results during the first day because the date falls on a national holiday when schools won't be operating though that hasn't prevented the CWT council here from distributing their written threats.

The council apparently demands 100 per cent increment on local teachers' salaries as well as improvement on their working environments, something that is said to be also a major problem, as well as settlement of their pending payment arrears.

The statement also instructs parents to keep their children at home during the days of the proposed strike so as to avoid what the council described as 'inconveniences,' to pupils and students.
