STATISTICS show that infection rate of HIV in Mwanza Region from mother to child has surged at between 20 and 45 per cent in the region.
The unhealthy situation was revealed by the Mwanza Regional Commissioner (RC), Mr Evarist Ndikilo, while giving statistics on Saturday as he was launching a special campaign to prevent mother to child HIV transmission.
“The problems of mother to child HIV transmission among pregnant and breastfeeding mothers keep on affecting many children in our region, we need to ensure that we play our part to reduce the problems,” said Mr Ndikilo.
He said that between five to ten per cent of the infected children contract HIV during pregnancy; ten to 15 per cent during delivery while between ten to 20 per cent get during breastfeeding.
Mr Ndikilo said the figures were alarming and were calling for concerted efforts in sorting out the problems.
“I urge pregnant women who either are attending the clinics or who are yet, to join the programme and ensure that the children born are free of HIV transmission,” he said.
He insisted that those who are attending the prevention programme should not stop mid way and keep on using the drugs throughout the given time for their own benefit.
The ministry of health and social welfare is set to reduce the mother to child HIV transmission rate to five per cent next year.
