THE TANZANIA Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) has announced countrywide power rationing effective yesterday following a simultaneous major breakdowns of generation machines at the main hydro-power stations.

Homes and industries will go without electricity for at least four hours a day. The abrupt fall of energy load to the national grid came from noticeable defects of machines at three main hydro power stations of Kidatu, Kihansi and Pangani and Ubungo Gas Power Plant.

According to a statement issued yesterday and signed by the firm's Acting Managing Director, Mr Stephen Mabada, power rationing would continue until the problem was solved. He said experts had started working out solutions to the problems, without specifying when the problems would be solved.

"The effects of reduced supply makes power rationing inevitable especially during peak hours between 6pm and 10pm. A comprehensive timetable for power rationing will be released later," reads part of the statement.

In a separate interview, Tanesco's spokesperson, Ms Badra Masoud, said power rationing had officially started and the problem had nothing to do with fall of water levels at the dams which are still high enough to sustain production.

Asked whether Tanesco would come up with contingency plans including engaging the Independent Power Tanzania Limited (IPTL) to supply emergency power to offset the shortage, Ms Masoud said the government would assess the situation and if necessary take appropriate measures.

"IPTL is currently producing 20MW to the national grid," she briefly said.

The rationing rekindles bitter memories of the intermittent power blackout between 2006 and 2007 that saw the country suffer one of its worst power shortage. Falling water levels in the hydroelectric dams due to prolonged drought caused long power rationing that adversely affected industries and homes in the whole country.

Comment   This is pathetic. Fifty years after independence the government has not been able to address this problem once and for all. If anything it has the mother source of all corruptions. Someone must be held accountable. It does not take a rocket since to solve the problem. Think of it this way; If TANESCO can take six hundred million shillings to renovate a house so that it can sell it to the officials for 60 million shillings then know that power rationing will be with us for life time.

Comment   It is a shame, for the country to inter into power rationing, it is quite unbeliavable to hear that we do not have standby machine when others go into defectiveness, we have to think twice and resolve this matter in the future to come.

Comment   TANESCO SHOULD CONSIDER NO POWER RATIONING FROM DUST TO DAWN.

Comment   We should be geared to look at economical costs versus politics and ufisadi. They should also be measured using opportunity costs. eg.purchasing the problematic gas plantsV/s v those costs. Otherwise the power problems will continue facing the nation.

    Comment   Ee, shagala bagala!

Comment   Kick out the cHairman and his board members of Tanesco. They have proved to be less cappable to handle the long term Umeme problems. They didn't stay forcus on implementing an altenative viable plan to keep powersharing ration from coming back on. Why are you laughing, you need to step back, put your things together, and leave the office with honour, get me?

    Thank you..

    Comment   Hi,
Real I can not understand why government should not take or say buy the so called Richmond now Dowans power plant.

Four hrs out of power is a big problem to our economy, right now inflation figure is two digits ie 12%. we have reached a time when politicians should not take this country to the grave due to their political interest.

Let us make a difficult decission by bring the power to the grid from the power plant which is idle in our mother land at ubungo.

I do not see the reason for this power retionning.

    Thanks.

    Comment   Not again!

We really need to look into the possibility of liberalising the energy sector. TANESCO's monopoly has to end.

Comment   does this include kisiwa cha giza, Zanzibar?

Comment   I feel shame for country to utilize outdated powersource, by when thos palants are installed? in which ratio capacity to supply? Goverment should think expansion for power source rather than depending the old fashioned plants

TANESCO should introduce backup plants i case of breakdown rather than announcing power rationing oftenly.

We need clear and scientific reason in capacity of TANESCO

Iam very sad ladies and gentlemen

Comment   dont talk about "liberalising" which, in effect, LOCKS a lot of pockets...if you know what I mean...

Comment   Is this a surprise in a country which is backward due to the people placed in these type of institutions??

Comment   49 years of Uhuru and we can't solve this problem - SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comment   Its real disapointing, we dont know if our economy will grow in such a situation. It cannot take six month without power rationing, so please tell us the exact time this problem will be resolved. We are loosing a lot of money due to this unstable of power hence our production are going down now and then.

Comment   Hats off to tanesco for continuosly keeping up to its promise of rationing. They cant handle the utilty company and wants to continue to hold its customers at ransom due to its monoppoly. what can the customers do? Nothing but gulp down one more bitter pill. Rationing has so much become an order of the day that there are no more surprises. It is well understood that we have incompetant people who just dont care whats happening to the mass. Thank you Tanesco well done.

Comment   Again money making time wow !!!!!!!!!!!! shameless creatures.

Comment   Again money making time wow !!!!!!!!!!!! shameless creatures.

Comment   does state house included or not ?

Comment   One would think that Tanesco and others would have learnt from past mistakes and ensure that something like this does not happen. Have you heard of "Preventative Maintenance"? This is to ensure that so many generating plants don't break down at the same time. You would think Tanesco would have contigency plans in case of such a situation. Without reliable power supply, how can we attract foreign companies to set up shop here and provide employment to thousands of Tanzanians?

Comment   It is disgusting, where has all the aid given for these Tanesco projects over a long time gone? - to more fat cats in the corrupt Government and related organizations no doubt, it is the poor people who suffer through all of this, year after year after year, come on Tanzania stop the greed and the rot! Corrupt leadership and getting rich quick aside, have you officials and leaders no sense of pride, you are letting the country down, shame on you! From an ex-Tanzanian ashamed that things in the 21st century haven't changed, it breaks my heart as I have family and friends there and they have go through this state of affairs yet again!

Comment   This country will not have its power problems solved for another 100 years period.

Comment   Happy to hear that the good times are Back! no power so we can go out for dinner !!!
I only want that the BIG WIGS / SHOTS IN THE GOVT AND TANESCO should not have power too ! this means that they should not run their a/c 's , tv's etc like us, on BIG GENSETS PAID BY US ! THE TAXPAYERS!!!
ALL THE LARGE GENSETS SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM THEIR REPECTIVE HOMES AND THEY SHOULD FEEL WHAT A NORMAL TANZANIAN FEELS ! DARKNESS AND HEAT!!!!
    TAKE THAT !

Comment   call south africa they are the only ones who can help
