ONE of the three Kenyans among the 32 crew members who were arrested for undertaking illegal fishing activities in the country’s deep sea waters has died.

The Kenyan, Juma Kumbu (40), and his colleagues were arrested aboard a foreign fishing trawler, MV Tawariq, in March last year. The Principal Commissioner of Prisons (PCP), Mr Augustino Nanyaro, confirmed the death of the accused person in Dar es Salaam today.

“It is true that a Kenyan, one of the crew members arrested for illegal fishing in Tanzanian waters, has died,” the prisons boss told 'Daily News'.

Mr Nanyaro said the accused person had health complications since he was arrested, ruling out reports that he had died under mysterious circumstances.

“There was nothing mysterious about his death, the accused died of health complications,” he stressed.

The crew member died on February 3 and his body is being preserved at the Muhimbili National Hospital in the city. Preparations to transport the body back to Kenya are already in progress, Mr Nanyaro said.

The accused include eight Chinese, six Vietnamese, four Indonesians, two Taiwanese, seven Philippinos and three Kenyans.
