OVER 10,000 students who completed form four in 2008 failed to join teachers’ colleges for lack of vacancies, Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training Ms Gaudensia Kabaka here today.

Ms Kabaka told the House that 15,489 students were eligible for the training but there were only 500 chances, adding that priority was given to Form Four leavers of 2008 who filled in cel-forms for joining teachers’ colleges.

The deputy minister was answering a question by Ms Ruth Msafiri (Muleba North-CCM) who wanted to know why Form Four graduates in 2006 and 2007 were not selected to join teachers’ colleges in 2009.

Ms Kabaka noted that there were 41,860 Form Four leavers between 2006 and 2008 and that priority was for 2008 graduates.

“Experience has shown that some applicants are using certificates of their relatives who have graduated from teachers’ colleges and others are using fake certificates.

In order to plug loopholes for such malpractice, priority is given to fresh graduates,” the deputy minister observed.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister for Education and Vocational Training Mrs Mwantumu Mahiza said the government has put in place mechanism of making sure that teachers are paid their allowances and that salaries are deposited in their working stations before they report.

She also said that retired teachers, who work on contract basis, should be paid by District Executive Directors.

She was answering a question by Suleiman Kumchaya (Lulindi-CCM) who wanted to know reasons behind delay in disbursement of teachers’ salaries.
