IN another major milestone, Zain, winner of the 2009 CEOs Most Respected Company Award in Tanzania has launched the Zain Biashara Community, a business initiative geared towards empowering SMEs around the country.
This new undertaking will pave the way for small and medium business owners to benefit from a wide range of facilities that will in the long run strengthen their role in the nation's economic landscape.
In a bid to realize this initiative, Zain will collaborate with other partners to provide a wider scope to every SME that will join the programme.
Working with the Business Development Gateway (BDG) under the auspices of the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation (TPSF), East Africa Speakers Bureau (ESB) and the Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA),
Zain will offer eligibility to every SME that joins these business and investment entities to also join the Zain Biashara Community.
By becoming a Zain Biashara Community member, every SME will benefit from communication support, funding to some programmes as well as bulk sms to database with various updates.
Zain will also introduce a special tariff at a later stage. The initiative will however not offer hard cash.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam, Zain's Chief Commercial Officer Chiruyi Walingo said, ''This initiative underscores the importance Zain attaches to small and medium entrepreneurs around the country.
In most parts of Tanzania the day to day business activities carried out by these individuals and groups make a substantial contribution to the local economy.
Our desire is to see them grow in success and the best way for us to realize this dream is by walking with them side by side.
Our confidence in this program rests in the resourceful facilities the Zain Biashara Community will put at their disposal; these will propel them to levels of excellence they would otherwise only wish for at most.”
The Permanent Secretary Joyce Mapunjo graced the occasion and announced the formal launch of the Zain Biashara Community. ‘’ I commend Zain Tanzania for sponsoring the private sector ,’’ she said.
Along with Zain on the mainland and in Zanzibar, BDG will co-operate with other major local partners specialized in business training, consulting, SME banking, enterprise development and business networking.
These include TCCIA, NMB, the Zanzibar Institute of Financial Administration (ZIFA), the Zanzibar National Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (ZNCCIA) and the People's Bank of Zanzibar (PBZ).
Zain's involvement in this program is one in many ways so far the telecommunication giant has pitched in to support local initiatives.
Much support has already gone into education and health amongst other key areas and now that the company is lending its hand to the small business sector, its role in advancing development through co-operation continues to be relevant.
