MAMA Maria Nyerere today called upon the Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) retired professors to advise the government on how to overcome problems caused by climate change.
Mama Maria made the remarks today during celebrations to honour retired lecturers where she received an award on behalf of her late husband, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere.
“I call upon you to sit down again and see how you can help this country in collaboration with the government because the situation is climatically not good,” she said.
She said in a developing country people might think the retired academicians have done nothing but SUA has done well in agriculture through helping small farmers.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology, Florence Turuka, said that SUA still faced many challenges in the agricultural sector, including taking the new technologies to the target groups in the rural areas.
He said SUA should provide scientific and technical education to the small scale farmers in order to move forward.
The SUA Vice-Chancellor, Gerald Monela, paid tribute to those who were given awards in recognition of the valuable services since the university was established and urged others to emulate the good example for the betterment of the university and the country at large.
More than 20 people received the awards. Mwalimu Nyerere was the founder of SUA University and was the first Chancellor of the University.
