THE Tanzania Meteorological Agency has said that the presence of moderate tropical cyclone namely ‘Bongani’ over the Indian Ocean North of the Madagascar Island will not influence weather in the country.

A statement issued by the TMA Acting Director General, Mr Philbert Tibaijuka today, said that the ‘Bongani’ which was earlier feared because of its central pressure of 997hPa and speed of 12km per hour accosting the country’s coast has deteriorated in strength and speed.

The cyclone which is said to be 1570km away from the Southern Coast of the country was also feared to bring about El-Nino rains to the coastal areas.

There have been fears of El-Nino in the country with authorities giving conflicting information. Of late over 20 people died in a landslide at a village on high land in Same district, Kilimanjaro region.

The deaths resulted from the sweeping of seven households by sliding land at Goha village after four days of heavy downpour. The incident went hand in hand with another one in Msoga, Coastal Region in which a cyclonic rainfall left over 190 people homeless.

TMA has been maintaining that the ongoing rains have nothing to do with El Nino. However, low land dwellers have been urged to vacate because the situation was uncertain.
