THE Tanzania Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture (TCCIA), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the organisation of Comorian businessmen, to trade agricultural produce as a way of supporting 'Kilimo Kwanza Initiative.'
The signing ceremony was held in Dar es Salaam today by the TCCIA Deputy Chairman, Mr Gideon Kaunda. The Comorian side was represented by their Executive Director, Mr Said Chaihani.
“This is an historical event in our countries and we are doing this as a way of supporting the philosophy of Kilimo Kwanza Initiative,” Mr Kaunda said.
The MoU was to act as a door opener to the businesses of the two countries and that it was a golden opportunity for Tanzanian farmers to benefit.
The process that led into the MoU signing started when the TCCIA delegation toured Comoro and learnt that there was market for agricultural produce. Talks started between the two sides immediately.
He said that to start with, the organisation of Comorian businessmen has placed an order of six tonnes of onions, which is to act as an initiation of long term business co-operation.
Mr Kaunda said: “I urge our members to increase agricultural productions, in a bid to meet demands.
We have just started and our major target is to increase sensitisation in agriculture, so as we can ensure business growth through agricultural produces, since this is only solution to problems facing farmers.”
Mr Chaihane said the MoU would boost ties and business co-operation between the two countries.
He added; “This is just a beginning, we are looking forward to have an expanded business ties with Tanzania. We are ready to support ‘Kilimo Kwanza,’ that is why we have started with the support in agriculture.”
He said that to begin the co-operation, Comoro has placed order for six tonnes of onion, four tonnes of potatoes, three tones of maize, ten tones of rice and five tones of maize flour.
