THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) in Kagera and Rukwa regions, have recorded over 100 per cent revenue collection.

Acting Kagera Regional TRA Manager, Mr Enos Mgimba, said that the region has collected a total of 4.6bn/- between July to October, this year, which is equivalent of 100 per cent achievement.

He said that the regional authority had targeted to collect 4.06bn/- within the past four months. He said out of the amount, 2.16bn/- was collected from Domestic Revenue Department (DRP), while other 2.55bn/- was collected from Customs Department (CD).

“We have surpassed the target mainly due to the commitment by tax payers. TRA is conducting education campaigns, aimed to sensitize taxpayers to know their rights and obligations.

These seminars are very important because some business people were ignorant as far as tax payment is concerned,” he said.

Mr Mgimba explained that the 2.16bn/- collected by the Domestic Revenue Dept, was equivalent to 104 per cent achievement, while other 2.55bn/- from the Customs Dept was equal to 98 per cent success.

He said during the Tax Payers’ Week which reached climax today over 70 per cent of registered taxpayers were covered in the region.

TRA in Rukwa Region has, during 2008/09 fiscal year, achieved 112.4 per cent performance in revenue collection, after earning 2.7bn/- of the projected 2.4bn/-, the Acting Regional Manager, Mr Elinami Terry, said.

He further said during the financial year under review, TRA in the region had budgeted to collect over 2.1bn/- from the Domestic Revenue Department (DRD), but surpassed the target by 106.5 per cent after bagging 2.3bn/-.

The Customs Department had set a target of collecting over 238.7m/-, but it also exceeded its projected target by collecting over 403.1m/- which, he said , was 168 per cent performance.

Mr Terry said, however, that during the 2008/09 fiscal year, TRA in the region had estimated to collect 19bn/-, that means that “ when such collections are compared with 2007/08 financial year and that of last financial year, about 35.6 per cent of revenue growth has been registered, he said.

“The rate of compliance is very impressive," said Mr Terry, adding that during the current fiscal year (2009/2010), TRA in the region had between July and October, this year, estimated to collect over 957m/-, but exceeded in collecting over 1bn/-, of which 902m/- and 168m/- was collected by DRD and Custom Department respectively.
