THE growing number of alumni who study in Korea was recently bolstered when about 40 members with different professions from various ministries and public organizations of Tanzania convened in Dar es Salaam.
Speaking to the 'Daily News' on the event, the Korea International Co-operation Agency (KOICA) Training Co-ordinator, Ms Judith Sassi said that the occasion gave an opportunity for members to share various ideas and experiences for enhancing the socio-economic development of Tanzania.
“This was also a unique way for the alumni to deepen the existing friendly relations between Korea and Tanzania through candid discussion on various development issues with the KOICA officials and volunteers based in the country,” she said.
In his opening remarks, the KOICA Resident Representative, Mr OH urged KAAT members to share and expand their experience and expertise acquired during their stay in Korea, so as to contribute more effectively and actively to the socio-economic development of Tanzania.
KAAT is a non-profit alumni association formed by Tanzanians who participated in the KOICA Training Programme and KOICA Scholarship Programme for master’s degree in Korea. KAAT was first established in 2003 with 95 members and to date there are more than 500 members.
According to the statement issued by KOICA in Dar es Salaam through the training programme, KOICA has been inviting Tanzanian officials to participate in various courses in Korea, including Masters Programme with the main focus on the areas of health, education, good governance, rural development and ICT since 1992.
Other KOICA programmes include World Friends Korea volunteers, World Friends Advisor, the Project-type Co-operation and Support to NGOs, said the statement. The Co-ordinator further said that the event started with the General Assembly, whereby members elected new leaders of the executive committee for 2012/13 and discussed the activity plan for next year.
She said thereafter the annual dinner was hosted by the Resident Representative of KOICA Tanzania Office, Mr Holywater OH. KAAT and KOICA have been jointly carrying out several activities.
In July this year KOICA invited the KAAT Secretary to participate in the KOICA Alumni Association Meeting in Korea where the representative of KOICA alumni associations all around the world attended. Also, KAAT has co-operated with KOICA volunteers to support the volunteers charity activities.
