ALI Hamad Hajji (28), a driver and Khatib Haroub Alawi (20), a conductor, both from Maugani village in Unguja West District, have been sentenced to a one-week sentence for overloading passengers by Mwanakwerekwe District Court.

The two accused pleaded guilty to the overloading charges, which is contrary to road safety traffic.

District Magistrate Omar Mcha Hamza also ordered the two to pay a fine equivalent to 2,000/- for all the extra passengers in the bus.

Prosecutor Maulid Ame Mohamed from the Director of Public Prosecuting Office told the court that on Christmas Day (Dec 25), traffic police on patrol duties at Mombasa Super Market in the municipality arrested the offenders for carrying 24 passengers instead of 20 in a vehicle with registration numbers Z711AS.
