PRICES of petrol on Friday increased to 6,000/- per litre in some parts of Mara Region forcing the hike of transport fare ahead of Happy New Year holidays.

Musoma Municipality is the most affected area followed by Tarime district, according to latest reports.

"The situation is critical, sending dalala transport fare to 500/- from 300/- here in Musoma, but we are doing everything to stop this", Marine and Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) Regional Manager for Mara, Mr Michael Rodgers said on Friday.

He added that he was forced to work with Musoma district authorities in a bid to reduce transport fees triggered by the critical shortage of petrol in the region.

There are also reports that Tarime town has been experiencing shortage of petrol since Christmas as drivers of commuter vehicles are being forced to buy petrol from unauthorized traders at between 3,000/- and 4,000/- per litre instead of 2,179/- from the fuel stations.

“There is no petrol in all Tarime stations and we are now buying from the streets at high prices. In the morning we buy at 3,000/- per litre and at times the price goes up to 4,000/- per litre in the evening”, several drivers of commuter vehicles operating in Tarime said.

On Christmas Day hundreds of motorist ferrying passengers by using motorcycles in Tarime were forced to pack their machines citing lack of petrol.
