IN efforts to combat escalating incidents of child and women abuse in the Isles, the Office of the Mufti of Zanzibar is conducting a nationwide registration of all Madrassas (Quran schools) with the aim of identifying them and their teachers.

Secretary in the Mufti Office, Sheikh Fadhil Soraga said on Thursday that some Quran schools' teachers have been implicated as perpetrators of child abuse mainly sodomy and rape.

Mufti's office is the government institution responsible for overseeing Muslim activities in Zanzibar.

"We have joined forces to fight this vice and crime of raping children. It is very sad that some Quran teachers are involved in the crime. We need to identify all Quran schools and certify all teachers, this may help behaviour change," Soraga said.

The secretary said the office of the Mufti of Zanzibar condemns "in available terms, rapists and all people engaged in abusing children and women, because Islam is against the evil deeds."

He attributed the ongoing devastating child abuse to moral decay, "although people are followers of religions, their beliefs are growingly questionable because people are not observing religious teachings."

According to statistics from the police and centres for caring for rape victims at Mnazi-Mmoja Hospital, at least one child abuse case including rape is reported every day.
